Modular Type Scale

Sets font sizes by multiplying a base size by a constant ratio.

Size = base × ratioˢᵗᵉᵖ

Worked example: 16 × 1.25² = 25 px.

Why it matters

It gives a clear hierarchy, with sizes that feel related.

How to use it

  • Pick a base size, such as 16 px.
  • Pick a ratio, such as 1.25.
  • Round the results, and use only a few steps.

Example

With base 16 and ratio 1.25, the steps are 16, 20, 25 and 31 px.
